Need help with installing ati drivers in ubuntu
Heya,
I recently installed Ubuntu Linux on my portable (IBM Thinkpad R51)...and the portable has an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with I don't know how little memory.

Anyway...the drivers are somehow not properly installed. I can't use this 'compiz' I think it is.

I tried to look for some guides. But either they're about some new hot shot gfx-card or else they use menus that my ubuntu doesn't show. Fx I don't have that 'System'-->'Administration'-->'Restricted Drivers' in my roll down menus, and I can't figure out why.

I managed to install envyng only to find out that it only supports ATI radeon 8xxx and radeon 9xxx cards or something like that.

So if anyone knows of a guide/way to install the correct driver that is easy to follow, that'd be cool.

If you use Ubuntu 8.04, it is now called "Hardware Drivers".
Or try installing the driver that envyNG detects. You can uninstall it from envyNG, if it does not work correctly.

Well...EnvyNG (When using the automatic update) tells me that my graphics card is too old or something like that. When I try to use the manual it keeps trying to connect through a proxy setting which only applies to when I use my laptop at uni.

The 'Hardware drivers' list is empty and doesn't offer much in terms of adding or removing drivers. Sofar it only seems to list already installed hardware, and its completely empty.

So things kinda stop there....

Do I need to log in as 'root' to use the 'Hardware drivers' menu or something?

No, you don't. It asks you for your password instead whr\en you run it.

I tried to use the envyng again while at uni, since then the proxy would work. And it did...it detected the wrong video card and now I'm stuck with a 640 by 480 resolution! I rebooted in recovery mode and typed:
envyng --uninstall-all
reboot

Now I'm stuck with this resolution. How do I get the right driver in for my mobility radeon 7500 so that I can enable all the sweet visual effects?
