I have verified everything to be as you instructed. I cut and pasted your code directly from the web page. I went into the log file to see a more descriptive error message:
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Sat May 16 08:51:33 2009
(==) Using config file : "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
Data incomplete in file : /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Undefined InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" referenced by ServerLayout "Default Layout".

Please consult the The.X.Org Foundation support at http:/wiki.x.org for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

Add code for Keyboard and Mouse too.
Add InputDevice "Configured Mouse" in last section.
Code:Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "kbd" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Generic Card" Driver "vesa" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" Option "DPMS" HorizSync 30-71 VertRefresh 50-160 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Generic Card" Monitor "Generic Monitor" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" EndSubSection EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen "Default Screen" InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" EndSection
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Now I boot up normally and the display appears to be working now. I have opened several applications at the same time and have resized windows and moved them across other windows. I can see the back windows being refreshed over the part where the top window moved across.
I really appreciate your help with this. Is there any documentation available that would give the proper settings for xorg.conf for different hardware? I would like to learn how to resolve such issues in case I install Linux on another PC.
