Please provide ubuntu version information as well as whether or not your Windows partition has encrypted directories?

Re. encrypted directories: On Windows systems, you can encrypt directories and files so that unless you are logged in properly, they are rendered unreadable. I'm not sure Linux supports encrypted directories on an NTFS file system very well. I haven't personally tried that. In any case, since you are running Ubuntu 8.04, you might want to update your ntfs-3g drivers since there have been a lot of improvements to them in the past year or two. I use my Ubuntu 9.04 for accessing Windows file systems (ntfs and fat) all the time without problems, and I used to use 8.10 for that as well on my old laptop. I also use it to access and fix problems on client NTFS drives from my CentOS desktop system and haven't experienced any problems there either, although I do keep my system updated, especially in the file-system driver respect.
