    Failed to initialize HAL

Whenever I install Ubuntu 5.04, everything goes smoothly. But when it's properly set up and I use it for a while and then restart it, the desktop fails to load. I can see the brown desktop, but not the icons and wallpaper. I can see the 2 GNOME panels but not the icons and menus. And after a while, I get the message "Failed to inititalize HAL". What's wrong?

    I'm on a P4 1.8GHZ, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD. The partitions are as follows -
    HDA1 - Windows C: (NTFS) - 20GB
    HDA2 - Windows D: (NTFS) - 20GB
    HDA3 - EXT3 - 9.6GB
    HDA5 - SWAP - 455MB
    HDA6 - WIndows E: (NTFS) - 24GB

To make way for Linux, I had used Paragon Partition Manager on Windows 2000 to resize the D: to 20GB and I'd created the Linux partitions during the Ubuntu setup.

I looked at some ubuntu forums. They seem to think it could
be related to mounting smb network drives.
Check the file /etc/fstab for what drives are
    mounted at boot time.

I don't have any smb network drives mounted at startup.

    Hal initialization problem

    i had this error also.

the problem was that i deactivated dbus service from service-admin.
D-Bus is a message bus, used for sending messages between
    applications.

it is used heavily by many Ubuntu config scripts.

by deactivating it , at the runtime /var/run/dbus was not created and from here the hal error appeared.

So be sure that dbus service runs at startup and if the error persists reinstall dbus package.
