Recent xserver update has got me scared to reboot!

Hello!

Well apparently from what I have seen in various forums, there has been an xserver update that has left people without X due to a broken package.

I installed this update but have not yet rebooted. I did find a fix, but I still would like some more info.

Supposedly those with integrated Intel graphics were not affected.

I am not a computer guru, so I need to know if I am safe regarding this update.

The following is the specs of my Board. My question is.,Do I have integrated Intel graphics?

CPU

• Supports Intelฎ Pentium 4 / Celeron D /processors in LGA775 package.
• Supports up to Pentium 4 5XX and Celeron D 3XX sequence processor.
• Supoprt Intel 04B and 04A processors.
• Supports Intel Hyper-Threading technology.
• Supports up to 3.8GHz, FSB@ 800/533MHz

Chipset

• VIAฎ P4M800 Chipset
- 64bit P4 processors FSB 800MHz
- 64bit DDR SDRAM memory I/F (333/400MHz)
- 32bit AGP I/F (66MHz) for 4x/2x mode
- 8bit V-Link I/F (66MHz) with peak bandwidth of 266MB/s

• VIAฎ VT8237R Chipset (487 BGA)
- Integrated Hardware Sound Blaster/Direct Sound AC97 audio
- Ultra DMA 66/100/133 master mode PCI EIDE controller
- ACPI & PC2001 compliant enhanced power management
- Supports Serial ATA RAID 0, RAID 1
- Supports USB2.0 up to 8 ports

Main Memory

•
Supports Four memory banks using two 184-pin unbuffered DDR333/400 DDR DIMM.
• Supports up to 2GB memory size.
• Supports 2.5v DDR SDRAM.
Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
Example: Kingston HyperX DDR500 PC4000 operates at 2.65V, 3-4-4-8, CL=3.
For more information about specification of high performance memory modules, please check with your Memory Manufactures for more details.

Slots

• One AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) 8X/4X slot.
• Two PCI 2.2 32-bit PCI bus slots (support 3.3V/5V PCI bus interface).

BIOS

• The mainboard BIOS provides "Plug & Play" BIOS which detects the peripheral devices and expansion cards of the board automatically.
• The mainboard provides a Desktop Management Interface (DMI) function which records your mainboard specifications.

On-Board IDE

• An IDE Controller on the VT8237R chipset provides IDE HDD/ CD-ROM with PIO, Bus Master and Ultra DMA133/100/66 operation modes.
• Can connect up to four IDE devices.
• Serial ATA 150 controller integrated in VT8237R

Well I did reboot, now I'm F^&*D

I run Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake and it has been working perfectly on my desktop for a while now. No hardware changes have been made. My display adapter is an onboard SiS 661FX on "PCI:1:0:0"

It was automatically configured by xserver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf as;
"vesa"
"PCI:1:0:0"

But it still worked perfectly even though it was an SiS.

Then there was an xserver UPGRADE !!!!

On re-booting up yesterday I got a nessage;

FAILED TO START THE XSERVER
IT IS LIKELY IT IS NOT SET UP CORRECTLY
EE NO DEVICES DETECTED
NO SCREENS FOUND

I then just have a command prompt.

If I run
sudo X :1 -scanpci
all pci's are displayed from 0:0:0 to 0:5:0
but no 1:0:0 !!! Is this correct.

I have modified xorg.conf and changed to "ati" "radeon" "vesa" "vga"
"sis" EVERYTHING but still no luck.

I have used "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver" to reconfigure after every change but still NOTHING !!

you should run
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo ap-get upgrade
which should fix the borked upgrade that was released

Tried it, still no joy

ran;

sudo apt-get update

says;

failed to fetch CD-ROM{Ubuntu 6.06 etc............

Please use apt-cdrom to make this Cd-ROM available to APT

How do I do this ? Must I have my Ubuntu CD in the drive to do updates?

It then goes on to get 7 updates from http://

and all seems OK.

Displayed;

some index files failed to download, they may have been ignored , or old ones used instead

then ran;

sudo ap-get update

command not found !!

Restarted but still getting error message "Fatal server error, no screens found"
