permission problem?

After installing Ubuntu 6.06 manually (not using the installer but bootstrapping and apt-geting packages) i dont have network or sound after i log in. I hear some sound when the login screen comes up. When i log in the volume control says no devices found. I'm wondering if this is some sort of permission problem causing both or 2 seperate issues. Thanks for any help.

I had a similar problem when I updated from breezy to dapper, to solve the sound issues I went to System > Administration > Sound and selected and saw to different sound card (when I just have one!), tested both and one worked and i set that as the default and the prob was solved.
