Can't display desktop. Might be my graphics card?

I'm trying to run ubuntu live cd from Microsoft Virutal PC, and i am having a big problem. I run it, it shows me the little ubuntu graphic and i get through to the desktop part. This gets strange here: I get a black screen with a bumch of red lines (Like 1px wide), and the menu are in huge letter's that look like you hit "Add Noise" in photoshop multiple times. The same thing happened when trying to run Gnome desktop in ubuntu.

I don't have Microparp to try that on but have you tried hitting Ctrl+Alt and the plus or minus keys, this might alter the screen resolution
