ubuntu first load help

I have had Ubuntu for about three months now and I wanted to upgrade to the 64 bit ubuntu. So I downloaded the alternative install cd and installed it. Everything worked fine until my first boot when all I got was a blank screen. I checked my monitor and it returned setting way out of the range of it, so I booted in recovery mode and change xorg.conf for my monitor settings and when I typed startx I still got a blank screen and I found that I could not go to the commend line by ctrl-alt-f1. Please help I am completely lost.

What kind of video hardware do you have? Also, if 32-bit Ubuntu worked fine for you, why did you find it necessary to mess with 64-bit?

I have an ati radion 9600, an asus K8V motherboard and a athlon 64 3200+ processor. In responce to the second question, I was new to linux about three monthes ago. I knew my system was setup wrong by me either following the wrong advice on setting up my machine or me following the right advice the wrong way. I have learned my things since I first started and I wanted to start over on a clean system. Besides I wanted to see the diffrence between a 32 bit system and a 64 bit system.

That's very similar to my desktop system (except I have an Nvidia card). ATI's Linux support hasn't been very good in the past, so I would venture a guess that Ubuntu is having trouble with your Radeon. Have you tried installing 32-bit Ubuntu and seeing if it has the same problem?

Nothing wrong with curiosity, but I think a lot of us here could have saved you the trouble. At this particular point most of us who have tried 64-bit Linux agree that it's just not worth it yet. Applications aren't taking advantage of the new 64-bit features available, they're just recompiling the 32-bit versions of programs. There's no real performance difference in my experience, and you're a lot more likely to run into strange software problems.
