Having Grub problems!

Hey folks!

I've been using ubuntu dapper for quite a long time now. I Love it!

I have learned how to manually install apps, dual boot, edit /etc/fstab, /etc/apt/sources.list and most of the stuff that keeps me going.

But, I'm a newb when it comes to Grub issues!

I have a 120GB Ide master that houses ubuntu dapper, and a 20GB slave, FS Ext3 that was used as storage.

I decided that I wanted to install the Ubuntu C.E. (Christian Edition), onto my 20Gig storage, so I transfered all my files that were on that drive over to Hda1, and installed the C.E. Edition, hoping to dual-boot.

I now have two Working OS's, but I cant boot to either one without using the live cd!

It IS kinda cool cuz If you do not have the C.E. Live Cd, you cant boot to either OS, but I DO want a dual-boot option in grub!

Can someone please tell me how to reinstall grub to my MBR?

no reinstalling you have it already.. as long as the without the cd grub menu loads... then all you need to do is edit the menu and add the other kernel and point it to the ROOT of that OS.. if you can please post your

/boot/grub/grub.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst

There the same thing some distro's have both some don't

but here is an e.g.

title Vanilla, 2.6.17.6 (hyper-threading)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda8 fbcon=scrollback:128K
initrd /boot/fbsplash-EvenNewerTux-1024x768

^^^^^^ thats for ROOT = /dev/hda1 --> which is where /boot lies
then the part in the kernel line --> root=/dev/sda8 thats where the ROOT of the linux system lies

now heres one more

title Vanilla, 2.6.17.6
root (hd1,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda8 fbcon=scrollback:128K
initrd /boot/fbsplash-EvenNewerTux-1024x768

^^^ now the ROOT for grub /boot lies at /dev/hdb3

you need to edit them..

heres a small chart

root (hd0,0) = /dev/hda1
root (hd0,1) = /dev/hda2
root (hd1,0) = /dev/hdb1
root (hd1,1) = /dev/hdb2

now that won't apply to you if you have no IDE drives.. then change those 'h' to 's' .. thats if you use SATA or SCSI

root (hd3,5) = /dev/sdd6

I hope that helps..

and to reinstall.. if need be

sudo apt-get install grub
sudo grub

root (hd0,0) <-- u need to make that yours
setup (hd0) <-- same there two
quit
