    gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    Subsection "Display"
    Depth 8
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" <=====
    ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    EndSection

You should have a section like this add the resolutions you want under the default depth
Put your hand in an oven for a minute and it will be like an hour, sit beside a beautiful woman for an hour and it will be like a minute, that is relativity. --Albert Einstein

drop down list will show the resolutions listed under default depth.
check xorg.conf again and default depth should be 24.

you need root permissions for that.

    sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
