    Today's Challenge: installing Google Earth

    I've just downloaded GoogleEarthLinux.bin
and want to get it in, but it doesn't show up under Add/Remove..
nor under EasyUbuntu, so what do I do, now?

I suspect this .bin file sitting on my Desktop is some kinda compressed file
and not the actual installer package?
so I now need to un-compress it before I start on stage two?

    anyone?

    Try running "./GoogleEarthLinux.bin".

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I copied and pasted in your command to the Terminal, and hit Enter..
but all I got back was... No such file or directory
-presumably in wherever it thought it should be found?

remember you're dealing with a complete Terminal idiot here.

The GoogleEarthLinuix.bin file I downloaded is sitting on the desktop.
perhaps I have to put it elsewhere, for your suggested Command line to work?
    (If so...where?)

Make sure you make your working direction where the file is. You can check your working directory by typing "pwd". You can type "ls" to find out the content of the folder, and "cd (path)" to change the working directory. You can start up the terminal and type "cd Desktop" to move to the desktop.

    Ummmm...

    Okay. nice try.

    aplmac@Ubu610:~$ cd Desktop
    aplmac@Ubu610:~/Desktop$ ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin
    bash: ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin: Permission denied
    aplmac@Ubu610:~/Desktop$

    is what I get back.

Should the folks at G.Earth have made
a better, easier, more idiot-friendly installer for me to download?

    .................................

God bless legacy Operating Systems, warts and all
coz software installation is a snap compared to this.

    Code:
    cd Desktop
    ls -l
Check if the .bin is executable (i.e. it has rwxrw-rw- beside it -- the "x" is the important bit)

    If not
    Code:
    chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin
    ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

    naw..nothing worked.
    I downloaded the wrong thing, didn't I.

    it's not important:
I have G.Earth loaded and working on the XP hard drive.
