Did you prefix sudo to gain root privileges? Execute this

Code:
sudo sh NVIDIA ( hit TAB key twice )

Frustration!

So I did the e,e space "single", booted, typed in sudo sh DRIVER....loaded the installer, gave me the same freaking error as the beginning....

"You appear to be running in init 1, this can cause problems. Recommend installing in telinit 3" or something extremely close to this. Then obviously I type in telinit 3 and it loads x server again, in which case I get the error

ERROR: You appear to be running an X server; please exit X before
installing. For further details, please see the section INSTALLING
THE NVIDIA DRIVER in the README available on the Linux driver
download page at Welcome to NVIDIA - Graphics Cards, Motherboards, Notebooks, Desktop PCs.

I am going in circles...I can't believe that I installed this driver less than two months ago and I don't remember how I managed it. Thanks for all the help, any suggestions will continue to be greatly appreciated.

Boot up in GUI, press Alt+Ctrl+F1 and execute this
Code:
su
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
Try to install Driver again.

Found a possible solution

I found a possible solution using the "apt-get" command. I uninstalled the nvidia driver and reinstalled it, we'll see if it works. I still haven't figured out why I couldn't manually go from the driver but...oh well hopefully that won't be necessary now. Thanks for all your help

Check the Refresh rates in /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Are HorizSync and VertRefresh values specified in xorg.conf are supported by your Monitor? Check Monitor's Manual and set supported rates in xorg.conf file.

Refresh Rates?

I will search for the manual if needed but I have a quick question first...if it were a refresh rate issue wouldn't the blinking be more consistent? I have left my computer on over night and the next day it's fine, while other times within 2 minutes it starts blinking?

Working of X server depends on Video Driver and Refresh rates only. If you have installed correct Video Driver, problem could be in Refresh rates only.

Heat?

Could heat be the problem? I just realized yesterday that my fans aren't working in my computer...I am having the heatsink and fans replaced, do you think this could cause the screen to blink (possibly heating up the video card or something like that?)

Ouch... no fans! That is a problem. I suppose it's possibly the problem for the blinking, too, but I'm not sure.

Let us know how things go after the repairs are made.
