I go into Adept Manager, type in the search, thunderbird, but nothing comes up, so I went to the thunderbird page, downloaded it, but what do I do now?...

    Goto Term.
    and try:
    sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install thunderbird. (or IceDove)
If that doesnt work check out the website of Thunderbird.
There you can download a precompiled package.

If you have the tar download from the mozilla site, just extract it to a directory and it runs straight from there. You'll need to create desktop or taskbar links after that.

I installed it in Ubuntu the other day from the Ubuntu repositories. Make sure you enable Univers and Multiverse in the repositories section of Synaptic, then refresh the sources and search again.
