Unable to burn DVDs
Hello all,
I am having some trouble burning DVDs on Gutsy Gibbon AMD64 (Ubuntu 7.10). I had a copy of Ubuntu Ultimate, which is based on Edgy, installed before and I was able to burn DVDs no problem. My processor is an AMD athlon 64 and the DVD drive that I am attempting to use is a Pioneer DVD-RW 108. I have tried 4 different methods of burning an .iso
- growisofs command
- K3b
- Nero for Linux 3
- Brasero
The error messages that I got are shown below:
growisofs:

Following this link PCBurn - Growisofs WRITE Errors I have found that the SK=4h/ASC=44h/ACQ=D9h error message means "4 44 00 INTERNAL TARGET FAILURE" (if my hex translation is right!) this unfortunately leaves me none the wiser.Code:imager (BraseroLocalImage) set_output job (BraseroLocalImage) set_task imager (BraseroLocalImage) get_track job (BraseroLocalImage) set_task Session starting: flags = 8535 media type = 0 speed = 0 track type = 8 track format = 2 output = none job (BraseroGrowisofs) set_rate recorder (BraseroGrowisofs) set_drive recorder (BraseroGrowisofs) set_flags job (BraseroGrowisofs) set_source job (BraseroGrowisofs) set_task recorder (BraseroGrowisofs) record process (BraseroGrowisofs) getting varg growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_action process (BraseroGrowisofs) got varg: growisofs -use-the-force-luke=notray -use-the-force-luke=dao -dvd-compat -use-the-force-luke=tty -Z /dev/hdd=/home/jim/Fifa 2007/rld-fi07.iso process (BraseroGrowisofs) launching command process (BraseroGrowisofs) stdout: Executing 'builtin_dd if=/home/jim/Fifa 2007/rld-fi07.iso of=/dev/hdd obs=32k seek=0' process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: /dev/hdd: engaging DVD-R DAO upon user request... process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: :-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=4h/ASC=44h/ACQ=D9h]: Input/output error process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: /dev/hdd: reserving 1461552 blocks process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: /dev/hdd: "Current Write Speed" is 4.1x1352KBps. process (BraseroGrowisofs) stdout: 1605632/2993258496 ( 0.1%) @0.0x, remaining 155:16 RBU 100.0% UBU 2.0% growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_written growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_total growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_rate growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_action growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) start_progress process (BraseroGrowisofs) stdout: 1605632/2993258496 ( 0.1%) @0.0x, remaining 248:25 RBU 100.0% UBU 100.0% growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_written growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_total growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_rate growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) set_action growisofs (BraseroGrowisofs) start_progress process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: :-[ WRITE@LBA=310h failed with SK=4h/ASC=44h/ACQ=D9h]: Input/output error process (BraseroGrowisofs) stderr: :-( write failed: Input/output error job (BraseroGrowisofs) asked to stop status = 1 error = 1 message = "Unhandled error, aborting" iter (BraseroGrowisofs) stopping process (BraseroGrowisofs) got killed iter (BraseroGrowisofs) stopped job (BraseroGrowisofs) got out of loop job (BraseroGrowisofs) set_task Session error : Unhandled error, aborting
My present theory is that this:
(K3bDevice::ScsiCommand) failed
means that I should be running the drive as a Scsi emulated one, which is something I had to do when I was running Breezy Badger.
Another theory is that the "dvd+rw-tools" which appears to contain the growisofs package in Gutsy has one which is incompatible with my set up, so I was thinking of down grading it to the version that comes with Edgy, does anyone know what this is called and where I can get it? And if it is wise to do such a thing?!
Any help appreciated,
Jim

Problem Solved
I managed to burn my DVD in the end you will all be pleased to hear. First I cleaned the lens then I used a better quality of media (Maxwell are much better than Tesco value - surprise, surprise)

Another fix to K3B failure to write large iso
This fix unfortunately didn't work in my case. I was using the same media i had used previously anyway. I had near identical error readouts and symptoms though. So for those reading here, i hit on a fix that may work for you as well. In my case, the burner spun and didn't write. My Sony DRU-720A even made funny click noises until I ejected the media. After a lengthy stall, the error message indicated that the media couldn't be written to – some input/ouput problem.
I had previously burned using K3B, single files larger than 4GB. In this instance 4.1GB (4300046336 Bytes). I used Memorex 16X DVD-R Media (as I had done previously). Problem appeared after upgrading my OS from Mandriva 2008.1 – i ran software as root, tried 2 distro's (MDV 2009.0 and Fedora 9), cleaned my writer lens, tried kde3, kde4, xfce, gnome, icewm, and all the burning software (xfburn gnomebake, brasero), and even considered bying a new writer. Fortunately, the stores were closed over a long weekend. So, THANKs to the Korean independence day holiday (indirectly), and my natural persistant and annoying tendency to never give in to defeat - here's what worked. And it didn't coast me any Korean Won either:
1. Removed the latest version of k3b. (Mandriva 2009.0 and Fedora's 9 repo's installed the KDE4 version by default).
2. Booted into the oldest kernel on my box (2.6.26-desktop586-2mnb).
3. Not sure if THIS is needed, but i ran k3b as root.
4. I guessed from one of the terminal readouts that KDE launcher may have been crashing the operation at some stage after I reverted to the older version, so I booted into xfce
5. My selections on the K3B version – mandriva package kde3-k3b-1.0.5-3mdv2009.0.i586 were as follows: speed: 6, writing> writing mode: auto, filesystem> uncheck Rock Ridge and Joliet extensions, Uncheck Generate UDF structures Other settings: unchecked Force input charset and Preserve file permissions. ISO level: level 3, No Rock Ridge Settings Misc> No Multisession
I am not sure where the problem really lay – kernel, KDE, KDE4 or the burn backends - but I hope my experience is of more use to someone else. Good luck.Last edited by hq197; 08-16-2008 at 10:59 PM. Reason: punctuation spelling
