On the Time zone trouble, I know that you need to click twice, once to view the region and once to set the local zone. But I'm not sure if this is your problem. What type of mouse do you have?

If you are using the LiveCD, are you sure the mouse is freezing or does the whole system appear to be sluggish? It is quiet normal for LiveCD's to be very slow and laggy.
