Question Help with package installation

Hi, I'm a very new user of Ubuntu. I've just installed the version 7.10 on a computer that I can't connect to the internet and now I'm trying to install some softwares to have experience. I have downloaded a file. package for Supertux and I have tried to install it. The installation dialogue asked me the file "autopackage.tar" that I have downloaded and directly installed from the icon istall. It now tells me that it doesn't find "SDL image library" and that I have to install a package with name similar to "SDL_image". I have found and downloaded a file zip with that name. I have extracted him but I don't know whether to install it. I have read the documentation of ubuntu but I have not found the solution. Could you help me? thanks

Welcome to the forums, Fabiolik87!

Here's a HowTo for installing software under Linux. If no internet access, you'll need to look at post #2 for installing from source/tarball.

Note that you can also install deb packages locally with:

Code:
sudo dpkg -i filename.deb

Thank you very much

Thank you very much for your help! I've found a package .deb and I've installed it. Now I think the game is installed into the directory /usr/share/games/supertux but I've another problem: I can't find an executable file and so I don't know how to play. Thanks once more for your help. Bye

Logout and log in back. Sometimes Icon appear in Menu after restarting session only.
Execute supertux in Terminal and post error message here, if any.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Ok

Ok, I've done your instructions but I didn't find the executable file. The terminal reports this:
fabio@fabio-desktop:~$ supertux
The program 'supertux' can be found in the following packages:
* supertux (You will have to enable component called 'universe')
* supertux-stable (You will have to enable component called 'universe')
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
bash: supertux: command not found

Error

I have given that command but it is not possibiile to find supertux. I have trained the components "universe" and I have seen that synaptic now recognizes supertux as installed package.

I executed this:
fabio@fabio-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install supertux
Lettura della lista dei pacchetti in corso... Fatto
Generazione dell'albero delle dipendenze in corso
Reading state information... Fatto
E: Impossibile trovare supertux (impossible to find supertux)
Then I executed this (because I saw that sinaptic recognized this package):
fabio@fabio-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install supertux-data
Lettura della lista dei pacchetti in corso... Fatto
Generazione dell'albero delle dipendenze in corso
Reading state information... Fatto
supertux-data è già alla versione più recente. (there is already the newer version)
0 aggiornati, 0 installati, 0 da rimuovere e 0 non aggiornati.
Then I executed the "supertux" command again and the output was the same:
fabio@fabio-desktop:~$ supertux
The program 'supertux' can be found in the following packages:
* supertux
* supertux-stable
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
bash: supertux: command not found

Post the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list file here.
Code:
less /etc/apt/sources.list
