Installing Nvidia proprietary driver on Ubuntu 7.10

I am having problem install Nvidia proprietary driver on Ubuntu 7.10 . After installed Ubuntu, I also installed the driver downloaded from nvidia site (169.***) and everything worked fine. But after updated to the newest kernel, the driver stopped working, and I couldn't do anything to make it work.

I have tried reinstalling the driver, use the driver from Ubuntu (System -> Administration -> Restricted Drivers Manager), but none of them worked (i'm sure that I have configured X to use the right driver-nvidia). This is weird because the last time I have used it without any problems

Could someone please help me getting it to work? Thank in advance

Are you sure you have the right nvidia-kernel package installed as well? I'm not sure why the 'restricted drivers' method didn't work, but it may be worth trying envy to install the drivers automatically. If you try this method, then choose then choose the uninstall option first, then the install option. It will connect to the nvidia site to download the correct driver, install other necessary packages and then auto-configure xorg.conf.

The problem is that you now have a conflict between the drivers. The kernel module for nvidia is kernel specific so it will need to be rebuilt after every kernel update. It is much better to use the available restricted module for nVidia cards.

benerivo's method should work for you to remove the driver and get sorted out, though if you ever find yourself reinstalling Ubuntu do try to stick with the restricted drivers method for installing the driver.
