How to create a .desktop file?

I am still learning how to create deb file, one problem I am facing now is I can not find relative materials to create a .desktop file, so can anyone post here the format of .desktop file or something else useful? thanks for your help!

I'm relatively new too to ubuntu, but i found a .desktop file in my Desktop folder.
    (/home/user/Desktop)
Mine was called: gnome-terminal.desktop (first file i found)

Do you mean that file? (seems like a language file)

You can read the spec and details of the file layout in the links below. A .desktop file is just plain text with instructions for launcing applications. They are part of the freedesktop sepcification.

I just use the *.desktop files in /usr/share/applications as a base if I need to create my own *.desktop files (if you were discussing the ones for menus).
