[SOLVED] Problem in updating, or getting software

I recently got my Ubuntu 8.04 OS up and running, dual-booting with Windows XP.
My first update went smoothly, but since then I cannot get any software, or install any updates for some reason.

This is the error I get:

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
    E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I have googled the problem, and tried the "sudo dpkg --configure -a" command many times, and have rebooted many times, too. I just can't figure out what's wrong. Can you help me?

UPDATE: I guess I was able to do a successful update. Adding programs is still a no-go.

    Execute this
    Code:
    sudo apt-get clean all
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install htop
Does it install htop? Post error message here, if any.

    * htop is a very nice command line process manager. Execute htop command to run it.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Run the following command, then the ones Devils Casper listed above:

    Code:
    sudo dpkg --configure -a
    Distribution: Archlinux
    Processor: 3 x Amd 64 bit
    Ram: 4 GB

What kernel are you using? Run

    uname -a
    and post the result here.
    Distribution: Archlinux
    Processor: 3 x Amd 64 bit
    Ram: 4 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT

    I shall do it tomorrow.

As for my kernal...I am very sorry, I don't even know what that is. I'm running Ubuntu 8.04, and I've been using the normal terminal for my command prompt, as I am used to calling it.

I just googled kernel, and I suppose I couldn't tell my kernel from my Windows partition. I would have to imagine it's the default (or perhaps the most updated) Ubuntu Hardy kernel.

    I think partitions are full.
    Execute this
    Code:
    df -h
    sudo fdisk -l
    Post output here.

The command I posted above will tell us what kernel you're using. The reason I ask this is because of this:

    Code:
    update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-2.6.24-19-generic
This is related to your kernel. If your kernel is later than 2.6.24-19 you'll be able to delete the initrd that is apparenly causing problems and this may clear your problem. At least that's my reasoning. What do you think Devils_Casper?

    Hi Manchunian !

According to error message, there is no space left. I think we should check available free space first.
