    Question How to install Thunderbird

    Hello,

I just installed Ubuntu in a dual boot cofiguration with Windows XP Home. It installed just fine and I ran it for a while.

While I was running it I downloaded the Linux install tar.gz file for Thunderbird email client. The archive opened in the archive manager and I extracted the files and folders into a folder on the Desktop.

There appears to be serveral executable files in the main folder, one of which has install in the file name, however doubleclicking these files does nothing, and if I right click them and select Open nothing happens as well.

Can someone please tell me how to complete the Thunderbird install?

    Thanks, Ray Parrish

    Welcome to the forums!

If you have your repositories setup correctly, you should be able to install it with the following command from the command line:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install thunderbird
If you have Synaptic installed, you can also use that to install it without needing to work from the command line.

    Hello again,

Being brand new to Ubuntu I have no idea how to access the command line.

I also don't know if I have Synaptic installed, how would I find it?

    Thanks, Ray Parrish

Look for Terminal in Menu. Execute command there only.

Synaptic Package Manager is pre-installed in Ubuntu. Look for it in Menu.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Synaptic is also known as adept package manager
System at the top is an orange box - that's what you want

actually that isn't true, synaptic and adept are different applications, both are used for the same thing, managing packages, synaptic is the default for gnome whereas adept is the default for kde

Ofcourse your right but for simplicity they are both just graphical front ends for apt. My fault as I prefer kubuntu I assume (wrongly most times) That others are using a kde front end
