    Execute this
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
Above code will download large chunk of packages, around 500-650 MB and will install KDE.

Or Download Kubuntu Alternate Installation CD and install it.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Would installing kubuntu over the top of ubuntu ruin any already installed programs, or change any settings?

If you install it through apt-get command then nothing will go wrong. You will have choice to load KDE or Gnome at Login Screen. I have installed KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, Icewm and Enlightenment in Debian. All are working fine.

KDE will be the default desktop in kubuntu, are you trying to remove KDE or are you trying to remove Linux?
