    Random Lock-ups

Every now and then my system will just lock up and I can not move the mouse sound will be looping if any was playing and everything will just freeze. I am running a 790i SLI motherboard, QX9770 Quad Extreme CPU, GF9800 GX2 video.

I ran a ram test which came out fine. I am thinking that the GX2 uses SLI and it might be causing a prob.

I added acpi=off and noacpi. I had a lock up with those options, but do not know how to test if it is really off.

Any help will be really appreciated...

I don't have to much experience with these issues but a couple of things come to mind.

Have you recently upgraded you hardware? I am thinking that it could be a power supply issue and if you have recently updated with out changing psu might not have the grunt.

    Does ctrl+alt+backspace work?

It is a new with PC 850w PSU. I don't know if I need more as there is 2 x 1TB HD's 1 x DVD burner and I don't know how much the QX9770 and 9800GX2 uses. The only thing I have done since I bought it was add the second 1TB HD.

Do you no how to check if acpi has been disabled? I have seen in other forums that might fix it (If it isn't a PSU problem).

    Execute this
    Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i vga
    grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    Post output here.

Post kernel line of /boot/grub/menu.lst file here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Here is everything you asked for...

    Code:
sudo lspci | grep -i vga
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 0604 (rev a2)
    Code:
    grep -i driver /etc/X11/xorg.conf
        Driver "kbd"
        Driver "mouse"
        Driver "nvidia"
The kernel lines, I have acpi=off and noapic there. Is that going to give me much problems in 3D performance? I have XPane and ETQW running on this machine in Linux as well.
    Code:
