I am engg student ..due to Free software Foundation i got exiting about the linux..and i want to use it ,but i cant..they gave me training in installing ubuntu 7.10 yesterday..i have done there!
but in my home i cant..

i have xp in 80 gb hard disk, then i planned to installl ubuntu in another 40 gb which i have got.
1)i removed the 80 gb power cable to be safe.
2)the problem is i first tried on open suse..latest on that 40 gb ..i finished installing that then i worked for 5 min..
3)then i rebooted my pc..the first error is GRAB error on harddisk.
    4)then i started installing that again..same error..
5)so i booted with xp and repartioned 40 gb then tried on ubuntu as i had the experience ..
6)shocked that i Got the following errors after that ubuntu bar going right d left..

    build in shell(ash)
    Enter 'help'for list of commands

    (initramfs)-"

    Welcome to the forums prabhakaran1989

It sounds as though your system is not able to boot from the hard drive you installed Linux to for some reason ... you mentioned 2 hard drives, does the BIOS let you set the system to boot from either drive?

If you can set the hard drive you install Linux to as the primary/master, try the install again ... whichever version of Linux you want to use and after the install restart the system and let us know the exact error message you receive when you try to boot.

Also after the install boot from the Ubuntu live CD, open a terminal and type
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
and post the output here ... the l is a small L

What you did? Please read post #2 and #3 again. Give us few more details.
Boot up from Ubuntu LiveCD, open Terminal and execute this
    Code:
    sudo fdisk -l
    Post output here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
