Ok, so you now have alien and printconf installed along with some dependencies.
Now you should be able to follow the steps outlined in either HowTo in order to get your printer drivers installed and printer configured.
If you are working in a terminal with the xserver running (inside of Gnome, in other words) your best bet would be to simply copy/paste the commands into the terminal provided the file names in the commands are all named exactly like the names in your particular files. Otherwise, you'll need to type them into the terminal making sure each letter has the proper case (lower/upper).oz

If you have two lexmark folders you can delete the empty one, then change (cd) into the directory containing the downloaded tarball file to run your commands.

They might have changed the way CUPS restarts since the howto was written, but you can also restart cups with a machine reboot.

Checked back over the steps and read the replies in the link Ubuntu forums and from what I can see I'm done with the install and can reboot like you said. I wasn;t the only 1 that got error message about running alien not as root. Gonna power down now and see what happens next. Wish me luck.

Ubuntu uses sudo rather than an enabled root account for system administration:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ubu...in-ubuntu.html
I think that confuses alien a bit.oz
