    startx doesn't work

I Got The Disk to Download The software to my computer(Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition). And I Installed it and when I finished it gave me blank screen and told me to login then it asked me to put in my password i did that then it scrolled me down to words that said ubuntu@ubuntu$ something like that and I tried all the commands such as sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, startx, I tried a lot and all failed. Can someone please help me ASAP.

    Thanks.

I'm pretty sure server edition is just command line, if you want a desktop you need desktop edition not server edition

Edit: A search of google gave me this link, It looks promising

If this is for a production sever, I would recommend not using a GUI. It adds extra security risks and affects performance. Typically, you want your servers to be lean, mean and cli

If this is a test or development server and you just want to learn how things work, I would recommend using a desktop version of Ubuntu. You can install all the server software on it anyway.

Ubuntu Server Edition isn't meant to be a desktop distro. I would have to agree with both elija on this and just install the server software as needed. But if you need something a little streamlined, go maybe with Xubuntu, or maybe if you really need the Server Edition with a GUI, maybe install a minimalistic WM like TWM.

Yeah, that'll work for you. If you check the link provided by BoJaN11, you'll be taken to some good info on how to install a GUI.
