The easiest (and fastest) way to install anything in Ubuntu or Debian is to use the package manager. In this case you want Synaptic Package manager. Just do a search for Gambas.
What in the world made you think I was doing that? I used Synaptic to install Gambas, it took an hour and 15 minutes, but it's installed.

I've since enabled a swap file and now packages are installing much faster and not freezing up the screen so I think I'm good now.

I don't know what made you think I was doing that, but I used Synaptic to install Gambas. It took an hour and 15 minutes to install after the download of the package files were done.

I've since enabled a swap file in Ubuntu and now packages are installing quickly so I think the problem is solved.
