Are you attempting to download and install Gambas manually, one package at a time? I would definitely not recommend this. The easiest (and fastest) way to install anything in Ubuntu or Debian is to use the package manager. In this case you want Synaptic Package manager. Just do a search for Gambas.

What in the world made you think I was doing that? I used Synaptic to install Gambas, it took an hour and 15 minutes, but it's installed.

I've since enabled a swap file and now packages are installing much faster and not freezing up the screen so I think I'm good now.

I don't know what made you think I was doing that, but I used Synaptic to install Gambas. It took an hour and 15 minutes to install after the download of the package files were done.

I've since enabled a swap file in Ubuntu and now packages are installing quickly so I think the problem is solved.
