TightVNC Help

Hello I am not a total newbie I have used Linux on and off for a few years..
I just started using UBUNTU a few months ago and have been making good progress in most of my endeavours except when trying to setup TIGHTVNC.

I have it running and logged in to a remote Gnome session from a WinblowsXP system downstairs. I had to install a client on the computer and it's owner wasn't really happy about it but for the sake of testing allowed me to do it.. I have read that you can setup a Java client which TightVNC will serve via a small http server it has built in. I downloaded the java files but can not find where to put them or how to activate the server..

ANY HELP???

Hi mrgoodtimes420,

I think java will already be operational from the server if your client machine has java installed. If the TightVNC server is up and working on the Ubuntu server, try VNCing into it via the Windows web browser using java. Ports 580* and 590* should be clear along th way. I always make these 5801 and 5901 since TightVNC will create desktp "1" when invoking the vncserver command. So if that's what you are doing too, from the Windows machine's browser go to http://ubuntu_machine:5801. Or use the Ubuntu machine's IP as in http://192.168.1.101:5801. If ports are clear (no firewalls), the Windows machine should be able to log into the Ubuntu machine using Java.

Thanks Dan for the help I was wondering if you knew anything about my next question.

Obviously I do not want my friends or family using my account since it has more privileges than I want them to have.. I was able to login to a shell as my dad using his account and start a vnc session.. But I don't want to have to have many people logged into the shell to use vnc..
How can I setup tightvnc to give them the Login Screen so they type in the username and password and get the desktop for the account they supplied..

can I ask why you're using tightvnc? I used it for a bit and thought that rdesktop and vncviewer were much better

Well i also can use VNCSERVER I just got tightvnc because from what I read tightvnc had better security and has a windows client. Also Tightvnc has a java applet for login so there is no need to install cient software.
