wireless not working in ubuntu 8.10

I am very new to linux and have just bought an asus904h eeepc that came pre loaded with xp.

when i checked the hardware using xp it game me :

Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Network Adapter
Atheros Ar 8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet controller

I installed ubuntu 8.10 and now I have no wirless internet.
When i typed "sudo lshw -C network" it game me:

network UNCLAIMED
description: Ethernet controller
product: AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI express Adapter
...

when I type "iwconfig" i get:

lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions
pan0 no wireless extensions



when i check hardware drivers i see:

support for Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN cards

As i understand it there has been problems with this chipset so after reading multiple forums and help sites i followed the instructions given here: Cannot Get Atheros AR5007EG Wireless Card to Work - Ubuntu Forums

and substituted the latest madwifi patch instead of the one given and still i have no wireless. I am very close to just putting windows back on and using a virtual machine but i had wanted to move away from windows so any help would be greatly appreciated.

you can use this application "ndiswrapper standard installed" in ubuntu 8.10 and others to install the windows driver for your build-in wifi card.

I have AR5007 and it is sin like e AR5006 in linux drivers.

I used this .inf present in the tar.gz in this link http://users.telenet.be/stefsite/DriverAR5007win.tar.gz

Just open ndiswrapper en select via browse the net5211.inf file and apply.

And it works perfectly
