Ubuntu Nvidia driver and dual monitors and forum don't work
I've had so many problems with Ubuntu. it runs fine version 8.10 64 bit, but I can't install nividia drivers to run both my monitors. and of course steam games don't work... So I thought I'd join the Ubuntu forums to ask questions on has to fix it... NOT EASY. I tried to join there forum, but I could not even find a page to make an account? dose anyone know how? They expected me to all ready have one... and after an hour looking at the Ubuntu web site I could not find anywhere to make an account and join there forum. So here I am, hoping someone here can help.
I just want to install the Nvidia driver for both monitors work and I might be able to install a 3rd party softare to let me play steam games. but Ubuntu keeps asking for some codes... I'm not sure what they are and when I try and update Ubuntu, if askes me for a password. I never set any passwords as I'm still learning the OS, so I tried "Root" and "Guest" both in lower and upercase, and both don't work. What is the bloody password, I never set one, so why is it doing this to me? I can't update Ubuntu. And it keeps asking me for some bloody code to install the Nvidia drive I downloaded? why? what is this code and where do I get it? And then other searches I've done tell me to get a "command line" and enter a command that deletes and/or fixes the problem... problem is that I have no idea how to find this command line in Ubuntu and know one what's to tell me, like it's a bit secerate, and I can't even join there forum to ask....
I'm a windows expert and work in IT with windows, but I thought it's time I learn more about other OS's, but Ubuntu is makeing it very hard as I can't even join there forum or install a Nvidia driver to run both my monitors, I'm just about to give up on Ubuntu as the surport form I can not access and there is no info on there web site on how to install and run dual monitors, and I can't sign up for there forums anywhere.
I know there will be plenty of smart arses out there how will just shut me down with insults, save your fingers and annoy someone else, I'm looking for real help and advise from real ppl and will be greatfull for it,
Thanks

Problems still
I managed to join there forum at the Ubuntu website. I search and look though there forum and can't see anything about Nivida drivers and Dual monitors and some codes that Ubuntu wants to install them....
And It would not let me start a new thread, so I'm back here look for help again.
When I try and install the new driver file I dl from Nvidia Ubuntu tells me is needs some sort of code to do it. I think it may need some sort of uncompression program like winrar or 7zip, that I would use in windows, but I'm new to linux and don't know what that program is??? Can anyone help?
And where ffs do I find this hidden cmd promtp or what ever it's called in linux, as Ubuntu seems to keep that a big secrect, like I said before, I'm new to this OS.
And work is the password to let the updates install in to Ubuntu, I never set any password when installing it and root and ROOT and Root all don't work,
This is driving me insane, if i was using windows, I would have spent the last 3 hours shooting my mates, lol. any help would be great. Thanks.

If you want to use the Linux installer from the NVIDIA website, then read these instructions from the NVIDIA website, which detail everything you need to do, including how to shutdown X before installing the driver.

default password to install the updates
what is the default password to install the updates in Ubuntu? I have tried, ROOT, Root and root, none of which work, I never set any password when installing it, so what's the go there?
and where do I find the command prompt or what ever it's called in Ubuntu? and whats this codes it keeps going on about to be able to install the Nvidia drivers? This should be so simple but it's not. I've never used this OS before and I'm just about to uninstall it us it it useless the way it is, I want to use both my monitors and play steam games, any help would be great.

Ubuntu uses sudo rather than root logins unless you enable the root account.
See this short article for more info about using sudo in Ubuntu:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ubu...in-ubuntu.html
The password you are looking for when using sudo should be your user password, and not a root password.oz
