Shutdown problem after upgrade to Intrepid
For some reason, half the time I choose "shutdown" from the user switcher menu, it merely takes me back to the login screen. I do remember, during the installation process, the computer telling me that something having to do with the upgraded menu would have to be installed manually, because, and I'm paraphrasing "objects were not where they were expected", or some other reason, which I don't recall. Anyone know how to fix this?

Seems a little odd.
Okay, after you have logged out (you're in the login screen), press [Ctrl + Alt + F1] to bring you to the text console. Log in with your username and password. at the prompt, type sudo poweroff. If the computer fails to power down, please let us know of any errors.

It may be in the GUI. So far, every time I've used the terminal, it's worked fine. However, in my testing, I have noticed that other things go wrong from that same menu in the GUI. Sometimes, when switching from Guest to a normal user, the screen just goes blank, and stays that way. It seems I get the shutdown or blank problem after every time I come back from guest, or othercommand from that menu. As I stated before, the terminal seems to be unaffected, and I can (so far) still shutdown from the "options" menu in the login screen that the normal shut down option takes me to. I suppose it's a relatively minor problem, and I'd rather not go through a whole new reinstall, if that's the only way to fix it. If no other solution is found, I am content to use the terminal.

I think this is an active but they are working on. You can also do a rounabout way by making your own shutdown button:
