    Unhappy No wired internet connection in 8.10

    I have been trying to install 8.10, on and off for quite some time, without any success. My latest try seems to be better than previous attempts, but I still can't get it to connect to the internet. I am dual booting 8.04 and 8.10. 8.04 works perfectly well.

    It goes without saying that both versions are using exactly the same computer and peripherals, so the problem must be with the 8.10 installation. Using 8.10, I get the message – Connection Established – You are now connected to the wired network. The problem is that I don't have any connection to the internet.

    Ifconfig gives the following result.

    brian@brian-desktop:~$ ifconfig
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:19:66:0b:d9:0b
    UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:64 Metric:1
    RX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:8 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:1240 (1.2 KB) TX bytes:1920 (1.9 KB)
    Interrupt:220 Base address:0xa000

    lo Link encap:Local Loopback
    inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
    inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
    UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

    The same command in 8.04 adds an extra line before the UP BROADCAST line –
    inet6 addr: fe80::219:66ff:fe0b:d90b/64 Scope:Link and an MTU of 1500

    I really do want to get it 8.10 working this time. Can anybody help?

    8.10 with no wired internet???

    I take it you are trying to configure a dial-up modem. Me too. Gnome PPP is installed in 8.10 but they ommitted it from the P menu this time. Aren't they considerate! It seems as though they believe that everyone, except maybe users in North Korea, now has broadband and that PPP can be chucked with yesterday's lotto tickets.

    If I had any idea how to use the command line I suppose I could set it up. Let me know if you manage it.

    Other flavors of Linux, SUSE 11.1 for instance, are very nice and still support dial-up but they are notoriously unstable compared to Ubuntu.

    There are more than just a few of us who wonder why they have done this.

    In the meanwhile I am staying with 8.04.
