[SOLVED] After logging in, no graphics (8.10)
Here is the thread from ubuntuforums.org documenting my problem from the start:
[ubuntu] Searched forums, still can't fix Grub 17 error - Ubuntu Forums
Here is my current status:
Okay, guys, here's the deal:
On a whim I tried to reinstall Ubuntu and this time it worked. There was one error message which I didn't write down (d'oh!) but I chose "skip" and everything seemed to go smoothly.
I rebooted w/o the CD, went through GRUB fine, entered my username and password then the pale orange screen showed briefly, then a blank (black) screen came up and I can hear the start up music, and see a regular cursor and that's it. Almost like I just can't see any graphics.
Don't know why the sudden change, but does anyone have any suggestions from this point???
As always, thanks for taking the time to look!

Welcome to the forums!
You could try installing from the "alternate CD" (text installer) if you haven't done so already. It works for me every time whereas the LiveCD installer never works correctly. Not certain that it will make any difference for you, though.oz

Hi. I ran into this problem last week. Unlike 8.04, 8.10 comes with fancy graphics enabled by default. If your system is too weak to handle it like the computer I was working on, you'll have to disable the fancy graphics to get a desktop instead of a black screen. From the command line (in recovery mode):
Exit and resume normal boot.Code:sudo apt-get remove compiz compiz-core

Hi, thanks so much for the help, but a simple reinstall solved the problem!! I'm gonna delete the post to not clutter the boards.
Thanks!!
