Considering the only thing antivirus does on Linux is slow the system down, you'd be better off uninstalling it.

Yep, thats right. Besides when you installed AVG I know a page showed up when you first clicked on it that said that their free edition was incapable of Updates. If you wish go with Clam AV. Linux doesn't run a real time antivirus anyhows. (to the best of my knowledge, anyways)

Check the following link for a short guide to security to help you determine if you need antivirus or other security applications installed at all:

many thanks for your trouble and reassurances . I did spend considerable time on the forum and was somewhat confused although the overall impression was that it was not necessary. Odd though that my pc mag Computeractive recommends it. Ok I'm wiping it offand will install ClamAV. I cant go around completely nakid!. I am so thrilled with my Ubuntu and the help everybody gives.
Looking forward to the day I can join in the discussions. brianmell

Good luck and welcome to Linux

If it makes you feel any better I haven't run antivirus on Linux in the nearly 5 years I've been using it. What I do run is the occasional rootkit detector. I've never had a positive with that either. Generally antivirus on Linux is just a courtesy for Windows users you might be interacting with....you won't get infected with anything but they might, so if you forwarded something to them and it never had any effect on you etc.

Anyway, enjoy and I look forward to seeing you around the forums

AVG in linux does allow updates (note does)

Surprised with the answers received and short on knowledge , I accepted the general concensus, but have delved deeper because as bigtomrodney stated "if traffic with windows" which I have as I run it on a seperate pc and non of my friends have Linux. Working on that one!.
for those requiring that added security AVG 7.5.51 like all AVG is free and excellent.(1 virus in 8 years in windows). After installing I have discover manual update is possible via "root > " avggui"., into service menu update. I have just received a 31MB update first since 5-1-09.
    Thanks tom,ozar and rokytnjl. Brianmell
