wine error
hello,
first of all, let me start with the inevitable words 'please dont flame me'
im newish to linux, as only using gentoo previously for enterprise uses (mail server, voip, etc) and wished to use ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop. i have been following the instructions posted here:
to install office 2007 onto my system. i followed each instruction carefully, and have recieved no errors untill i try and run the applications, at which i get a standerd microsoft error 'blah blah has encountered an error, send/ do not send error report'. the application does not start. only with powerpoint do i recieve the splash screen, and then an error.
please, this is very important to me, i know there are many linux users that will be angry at this, but look at it this way, i may be using a microsoft product on a linux system, but at least im using the operating system itself, and i am willing to go at great pains to stick with this system, despite having windows dual-booted (which i use for coding purposes only, as I'm doing a business information technology degree).
many thanks for your help,
james

If you need Windows applications and WINE did not work for you, you can run a Virtual Windows machine in Linux using Virtualbox or VMware. You can install Virtualbox from System->Administration->Synaptic. Just search for virtualbox. It will create a menu entry in Applications.

hello,
thanks for your reply.
i was thinking about this as a way through but mainly as a last resourt, as my laptop has low specs, running a vm will literatly munch the proecessing power out of my little machine.
i noticed that when trying to run publisher i recieved a c++ runtime error instead of the windows error, could it be this is related?
many thanks,
james

I'm sorry most of us aren't much help when it comes to Wine, we're more into looking for alternatives to Windows programs (like OpenOffice.Org).
Your question is best investigated in Wine's own website which has lots of documentation and its own forums for exactly these kind of questions.
