need a hand with audio...
so i have an hp pavilion entertainment series, dv4-1220us.
i have installed ubuntu 8.1 os, and am having problems with audio output. alsa was the suggested audio management, so i went with it. ubuntu recognizes my hardware. and i have entered all the audio trouble shooting code strands into the terminal. im too new with linux to be messing around and need to learn the right way the first time.
i think there will be a few weeks of fumbling before i have confidence using this os. i have been engineering systems using microsoft for the last ten years. i like verymuch that vmware is already here!!!! wow. this system is very impressive. but it would be nice to be able to check my audio messages in my email. and it would really be coooool to be able to listen to some miles davis while i configure my new linux system! help me!!!
i loaded ubuntu because i am ready to learn linux now that i have microsoft mastered. i dont hold much interest in mac systems. leopard and osx just dont do it for me.
i havent had any other problems, just the audio.
oh, and this will read foolishly, but while im here, i may as well ask: is kaspersky suported by ubuntu? im a long standing customer of theirs. if not, what about nod32? the only reason i am asking that here and now is because im not on kasperskylabs website.
thank you all for creating this support structure and making yourselves available to share your knowledge with the world.
when im ready, ill be helping out here too

There is a common fault in one of the sound controls, that affects HP dv series. It's a default setting at 635, that needs to be at 100.
That I know of, it only causes distorted and rapid sounds, not NO sound. Whether it is related to your problem, I'm not sure...
I think the controls accessed through command line; not GUI

Could your sound be muted?
try typing:
and set the volume if it's muted (you can mute/unmute by using the "m" key)Code:alsamixer
If there is nothing there you could try to look whether or not pulse gives an output to the speakers.

I'm not sure, I have seen reference to it before. I know however that both AVG and Avast4 have Linux versions and both are well reviewed and updated virus protection solutions.is kaspersky suported by ubuntu? im a long standing customer of theirs.
Virus protection is usually not a large concern in Linux since we try to only install software from trusted repositories, though it's not necessarily a bad thing to keep a check on incoming mail for malicious scripts; almost all Linux distros come with options for clamav, which is free, can be setup to do on-demand scanning, and fairly regularly updated. Its effectiveness has been criticized by some people, but I have yet to meet anyone who has received an infection because clam was running and it failed to detect it. Linux will not execute windows based viruses or worms (though the occasional trojan has been know to slip in through Wine), and are never executed with administrative privileges, so the risks are minimal.
