poblem with i845 video chipset
I have Intel D845GLLY motherboard with i845 video chipset. When I try to install (the option, which leaves my computer untouched, just experimenting with the install) Ubuntu 8.10 all I get is a black screen. If I choose the "fail safe" option, the screen appears allright. But the resolution is only 800x600, with no other options.
A same sort of thing happenend when I tried to upgrade my openSuSe 10.3 to 11.1: at the point where X should have started, the screen went all messy. This is why I decided to change to Ubuntu.
On the page https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JauntyJackal...hnicalOverview I found the following text::
"Users of Intel i845 or i865 video chipsets are unable to load X, getting an error message of "Fatal server error: Couldn't bind memory for BO front buffer". Users on these systems are advised to wait for a resolution to this bug before upgrading."
This should obviously apply to the next version of Ubuntu, but is this a bug, which hasn't been corrected in 8.10, either?
Is this something that could be corrected with a suitable driver, or is the problem something more profound than this? Do I have to go through all the other Linux distros till I find one that works with i845? It would be too bad, because I'd really like to try Ubuntu. I have a couple of friends who use it, and to me Ubuntu would seem really neat.

i was just thinking if you go in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in the section Device change the Driver content with vesa.
Cheers!Code:Driver "vesa"
