    New install questions

m totally new to ubuntu. Back in 99 I installed Mandrake, Debian and Redhat at dif times. But now I have a MBPro, and I tried to put Ubuntu on my desktop. I installed first time onto an external HD, but when it was booting I kept getting all these errors(#110) and USB error, and finally just a (>). Sooo I tried installing to c:\. It works, what I did was burn ISO to cd, then unzip to c then I ran umenu I think off of c:\. Anyway, it seems to be working except for wierd visual effects. The foreground is OK but in the background I see scrunched up images that are like skinny images of my present window, its like my current window has been squeezed into the width of an inch.
I still dont understand how to make a disk image. I tried using Roxio(win) but all it would allow me to do is make data disk. Which I did. I have a Dell XPS 400. Dal proc, 3 gig mem. 2 cd drives. I am gettng the boot scrren with (1)windoze (2) Ubuntu and I hit escape and chose option 1. Reg install. Now I am going thru an installation process, which I imagine is creating partitions? One more thing. I am in process of learning Cisco,(CCNA exam) I bought a cheap 2610 router, can I use Ubuntu to run it? They mention only Hyperterm and stuff in the book. I just dont like windows.Crashes too much. I know this is a lot, but if anyone can shed light....

    Welcome to the forums!

Check this HowTo for making sure that you properly download and burn the ISO file as an image to the CD/DVD:

    http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ins...ll-cd-dvd.html

Once you get a good burn to disk, try to install it and then post new threads with the details of each problem that you are running into.

Note that the HowTo above also covers properly booting from the newly created installation disk.

Hope you have fun with it.

Thanks Ozar. I found what I think is a good iso burner. I had no problem creating the iso, and then converting it to a zip.Anyway one way or another I seem to have a good install. But my sound is alittle weak. May have to use their Ctrl Panel? To mess with sound settings. I just started a major upgrade download, 264 files. seemed pretty innocuous. Lotta Open office, and stuff. I lovethat Open Office suite. I have used it in Mac also. So i dont guess Ill need a boot disk. I remember back in the day I used a Lilo thing.(still have it) Thanks a lot.

Glad you are up and running!

Sometimes, huge updates will break systems but hopefully that won't happen with your setup.

Best of luck with it, and don't hesitate to post new threads should you run into any new issues.

Welll the update was interesting. It kept stopping and giving me error messages. So I used one of those programs for isos. I was using isobuster but it was just too complicated and Im fairly comp literate. feel sorry for total newbies. (Ive had Linux before!)Anyway I totally uninstalled. Made a good install disk. Started over. I got rid of my wierd screens by using the"no special effects" thing. I was getting wierd backgrounds.
OK I cannot get my Pixma printer to work. Canon mp470, but I seee Im not alone. I tried istalling samba(not sure if I did it right) Am I losing somethng else by installing this? I was gonna use CUPS but Ive never fully understood this, tried it with OSx to no avail.
Now I have access to two printers, but I have two workgroups now. Before I had this..A dlink router connected to westell dsl modem. 2 desktops ethernetted.
    dlink-192.168.0.1
    wifes machine-192.168.0.196
    macbook(wireless)192.168.0.195
    iphone 192.168.0.198
You get the idea. Anyway..I have a workgroup called workgroup and dlink(thats waht i called my workgroup)
I still see both groups, but I see NO computers. Workgroup contains m desktop(xps) and I have good connection to net. No problems. I tried using gui configs, dhcp auto, etc. nothing. My upgrade icon is black now, so I have no upgrades.
Whaddya think? My dual boot is OK, but now I have about 6 choices, 5 linuxes and Windows media. The Linuxes are like safemodes etc. Its nice. Im confused with pop also. It is normally so easy, but they have so many choices. Ill figure it out. My gmail works of course. ANYONE?? Ideas?? I am not gonna let this thing beat me. In the past I have gotten frustrated and Formatted my HD haha. Also Iget wierd error messages about USB error 110, 5-1-7. Maybenot in that order.

I'm a little confused by what exectly you're trying to do, are you trying to change your linux version without using the installer? Are you trying to install Linux from inside windows? Typically, you'd not need to break apart an ISO, simply burn it to a disk and boot from the disk.

In Roxio, You do that with File -> Burn Disc from Image then load the iso. Anyway, since you seem to have made the thing boot, I guess that point is moot at the moment anyway.

You need CUPS anyway. It's normally installed and functiong during the install process (which I have no Idea what you did or how you did it). Samba is just a bridge between windows services and linux services (and a very complicated one at that), namely in this case, windows printing and CUPS. Without CUPS, network printing doesn't happen.

As far as choosing the right driver for your printer in CUPS, you'll have to do a search for what the right one is for your printer (I have a MX300, the working driver is MP150+ gutenprint. Other forums suggest your printer will work with the same driver).

If you wish to use the scanner to, you may have to build the sane backends from cvs source (I had to).

Once installed, Cups has its own web based configuration on top of utilities provided with many Linux distros, just in the event nothing else works or you don't have other utilities installed. use:
    Code:
    https://127.0.0.1:631/
I still see both groups, but I see NO computers. Workgroup contains m desktop(xps) and I have good connection to net. No problems.
Sounds like you have mismatched settings in your Linux hostname and Samba hostname settings. Also note that the Samba server configuration is not related to the client's (just to confuse things some more). I have read the Samba docs several times over and still can't get all the permissions to do what I want. It's a lot of reading, but in the end, you'll have the best luck configuring the samba server from manually editing the config file (/etc/samba/smb.conf) Also remember that Windows clients usernames must either be aliased to a linux user or be entered in the smbpasswd file (using smbpasswd -a [Windows_username] as root or sudo).

My dual boot is OK, but now I have about 6 choices, 5 linuxes and Windows media. The Linuxes are like safemodes etc.
As root, edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst (suggest from terminal using nano) When you get to the menu section towards the bottom, you can comment out extra entries you don't need. I'd suggest you keep uncommented your windows selection, your regular boot with the latest kernel, and the latest failsafe option. It's also not a bad idea to have a memtest86 option, just in case you want to test it after funky behavior.

BTW II downloaded a very good opensource for creating disk images, and made a good install disk. When I boot, after I choose Ubuntu 8.10 it usually comes up pretty quick, except sometimes Iget this error message,
    36.924170 USB 5-1.7read/64 error 110
    52.204170 same as above
a couple more of these lines with dif numbers on the left, and then finally
Unable to enumerate USB device 7
I have a hub(Belkin with about 5 or 6 things in it, Ive tried to figure out which is 7. But In spite of this arcane stuff, it runs quite good. I can print to local printers except Canon. (Do I need CUPS if its a local printer?) I dont wanna be a pest. If you have any ideas.. Thanks just the same.

dpkg is the lowest common denomonator in the Debian packaging system. If it exits in any status other than zero (0), something didn't install right. Unfortunately, the information givien is a little too sparse to understand what went wrong.

In some older Linux versions, I found I couldn't make usb devices connected through a hub work right until I unplugged the hub and plugged it back in. I haven't had that problem with Ubuntu or anything from the last couple years, but it's just an idea.

If you execute the command lsusb, you'll get an idea of how linux sees the usb device path.

Do I need CUPS if its a local printer?
With the exception of some old LPT port printers, yes. The Common Unix Printing System is as much a universal local interface as it is a networking interface so applications can send their print jobs to one interface in one format (postscript actually) and CUPS, once configured with the proper backend driver (see your flip camera post), will reformat the output and send it to the printer. Without CUPS, you're limited to text-only printing on static lp ports with obsolete printers. If you want to use your Canon Pixma, you'll need CUPS installed.
