Can't Install Ubuntu :(
Hello everyone.
New user 1st post...
I installed Ubuntu on an old PC a while ago & it all worked fine. I didn't have time to spend learning a new OS so I put XP back on the PC.
I now want to have another go with Ubunto & am trying to install it on the same machine.
I get so far into the installation process then the machine get stuck. I get past the "Configuring Network" & "Detecting Hardware" stages then I get this on the screen
"! WARNING. Device /dev/sdb has a logical sector size of 2048. Not all parts of GNU Parted support this at the moment abd the working is Highly Experimental"
I press Continue. I see "Starting up the Partioner" The progress bar displays 40% & then it just hangs. Left it for hours & nothing happens.
Can anyone help. I'm a newbie to Linux so assume I'm an idiot!
Thanks for reading

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I don't understand your reply though

So I put the Ubunto CD in, the PC boots from it, I get to the screen where it says "Install Ubunu" What do I do then. I don't understand what "executing" is or what "Terminal" is. I'm totally new to Linux, never used it before.
Could you give an idiot proof reply?
Sorry to be dumb & thank you again

There should be an option to just boot from the livecd without installing, select that option, then open applications->accessories->terminal, and type in that command

When you enter the command, fdisk -l , you should get some output regaarding the partition information of your computer. Post that output here to get some assistance.

Hi!
You will manage to do it, it's just a bit of trying at the start.
If you boot from the instalation cd, you will get a screen like that looks similar to the picture in the attachement.
Choose the option: Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer
than, it will load Ubuntu
After a few minutes, a desktop will appear.
Click in the left upper corner the menu applications, then choose accesoires an then terminal.
In the screen that appears you can type the command.
I hope this helps

hairymark2,
What the guys are telling you to do is to boot the ubuntu live cd. Choose the run ubuntu option and not the install option.
When it has booted, you will get the ubuntu gui.
Now open a terminal and type fdisk -l.

Thanks guys,
There's no option to run Ubuntu without installing it. The screen I get is different from the screenshots on the Ubuntu website. I downloaded it as a Bit Torrent & am thinking I might not have the best package.
I'm downloading again from the Ubuntu website this time & will try again.
Fingers crossed!!
