what desktop environment are you using? I think you can customize stuff in gnome with alacarte, but for the other I have no idea.
New to the internet, technical forums, or the hacker / open source community??

Have you checked gnome-look.org and kde-look.org? Its really easy to install themes. Just drop downloaded theme in Customization window.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
