Wubi installation of 8.10 isnt detecting or using wireless

recently installed 8.10 using wubi onto my samsung nc10 netbook.
it doesnt detect any wireless SSID's in the network manager, infact the network manager is blank apart from displaying a eth0 connection and a VPN connections option.

is there a fundamental problem with wubi/ubuntu and atheros wireless cards/networks?

    additional info

    - 8.10 ubuntu. wubi was used to install and also downloaded the distro itself.

    - its a atheros card in the nc10.

    - i typed a command into the terminal that i found on another website. this displayed information about connected network devices.
the atheros was UNCLAIMED and had minimal information under it, the marvell ethernet had a lot more info but was DISABLED.
    dunno if that helps.
subsequent help on that other site involved getting some sort of ndis wrapper but it didnt exist in the synaptic program installer thingy-ma-jig.

post edited to reflect that the livecd doesnt detect or use the wireless card either.

    additional information -

i see that the atheros is detected but doesnt work natively, from this page....

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NC10

it says to install the latest madwifi drivers.... but how?

typing that sudo apt-get command does nothing except say that it cannot find the file.

im not connected to the internet, because the wireless doesnt work, and i guess thats the reason it cannot find it.

any other way to get that program so i can install it?

Is it possible to plug in the ethernet connection in the laptop? That is the easiest way to get the driver working, otherwise you will need to download the driver and other files while under windows then burn them to a cd.
