Help with Linux Wireless
I read the wireless sticky in the other forum, but wasnt sure where to post my new thread with the information it asked for. Im new to these forums and Linux in general but lets give it a shot.
So I recently downloaded Unbuntu on my laptop, I used the Wubi version that let me install on top of windows, and select which OS to run at start up. I gave the installation 30GB to work with and it works just fine, at least what I know how to run sofar. I cant get the wireless card to work though and have done some research on how to get it working. But being as I am new to Linux, this is a pretty tough task for me.
I first tried to install NDISwrapper, but the instructions for that were so awful ( and im an A+ tech, so thats pretty bad ) I could not do it, or something else needs to be done in conjunction with that.
I then read the wireless sticky here and it asked me to do some terminal commands to get the info that someone here can use to help me, and here it is:
Unbuntu 8.10
kernel version 2.6.27-11-generic
Ethernet adapter ( using lspci command ) returned this information :
01:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter [168c:001c] (rev 01)
Hopefully this is enough to get me started, please let me know if I need to provide any additional information, and if this thread is totally in the wrong place I apologize for my nubness, if a Moderator wishes to move it, cool, just gimme a link so I can find it again

Ok I tried those 3 commands in the terminal, the first 2 installed something, the third told me to select one command specifically. Being new to linux I have no idea what these commands are doing, so I cant tell you much other then I ran the commands exactly as they are in the forum. Also someone in that thread was talking about enabling the wireless card in the Hardware Manager, but I cant seem to find where that is. I did also download a device manager but there is no functionality in them like in windows so Im lost as to what my next step should be. Any suggestions?

Actually, I think waterhead has the right idea:

If you can install the ath5k module with less hassle, the better.
It's be better if Ubuntu just included it by default, but I don't make that decision. Maybe in the future. Sorry for the trouble.

Hi,
How are you doing on getting this wireless to work? There seem to be two methods of doing it for your kernel version. If you had an older kernel, there is a third method. I hope that you aren't too confused about this.
D-cat: I see what you mean about a sticky for Atheros (mentioned in another thread). If you feel up to it, go ahead and write one up. There are no official rules on making stickies, so when it is finalized I can sticky it. If the other Mods object, we'll deal with it at that time.
We can continue this discussion in seperate, more appropriate, thread.
Paul
