    Strange behavior (sysmon pics)...

    CPU is peggin'. ???

I disconnected the DSL input to my modem, and it's still over 90% - 100%.

Nothing is showin' in the system monitor.

In the first pic, I shut down gimp with 6 images, and swap usage dropped, but CPU stayed up. Pic 2, nothin' was goin' on. Pic 3, I opened up the 6 image files again (with DSL UNPLUGGED, and it's still receivin' somethin'; no neighbors).

    Any ideas?

What version of Ubuntu are you using?
It may be Trackerd that is causing the high CPU usage.
It indexes all the files on your drives and can eat up resources.

Ubuntu 4 You: Trackerd Uses 100% of CPU in Gutsy

Also, in the system monitor click on View and select all processes.
Then look under the Process tab and click on the CPU header to sort the usage from high to low or low to high.

    I'm in Hardy.

I got ALL processes lit up. Looks like Xorg is the culprit. In system monitor, when I change screen from 'Processes', to 'Resources', the CPU gauge goes from base~20% to peak. Click back to Processes, and usage goes back down.

Why does 'Resources' peg the CPU?

Switching between those 2 screens shouldn't change the CPU usage that much.
I could see a small change due to the Resources tab displaying real time events with a graphical animation routine.

What computer and video card are you using?

And does the CPU spike all the time or randomly?

Also check your hard drive activity light when the CPU spikes like it has been. Interesting to see if there is a read/write routine happening at the same time.

You didn't happen to add any programs or make system changes before this started?

I'm still leaning towards trackerd or something similar.
If it lasts 15 to 20 minutes and happens once a day that would nail it as the indexing feature running rampant.
