I'm very glad that you informed me about my need to download the bulk of Ubuntu's new version through my slow dial-up connection. As a result I ordered the Ubuntu DVD from on-disk because I did not take a liking to Xubuntu; although it's chess game checkmated me in about six or seven moves.

Glad to hear that you are up and running!

Hopefully the ol' chess skills will improve as you play more.
Best of luck with your new system.

I did not install Xubuntu, I booted from the disk. I have yet to get the Ubuntu DVD. I may still chicken out of a new install if Ubuntu looks too complicated for me to grasp
I was wondering if there is a way to erase suse 10 from my hard drive and install Ubuntu without wiping my windows xp off of it?Linux registered user # 414321

No, you won't need to actually delete suse because the ubuntu installer will format those partitions for you. You'll basically just tell the ubuntu installer to install right over suse, using the same partitions for the ubuntu system. The installer will also reinstall GRUB to the master boot record, and then you should be all set to boot into ubuntu, or winxp.

At least in windows 97, years ago, I could win one out of three or four games. Xubuntu chess just cut me into irrelevant pieces.
Thanks again, Ozar. I get a cringe just contemplating writing down all of my suse bookmarks and files and knowing that I'll be pulling my hair out getting used to yet another os.Linux registered user # 414321

You shouldn't have to write anything down unless you just prefer to do so, because you should be able to copy your bookmarks and other data off onto another partition, or onto a flash drive if you like, and then move or import them into the new system once it's installed and ready.

As ever ... backup data first ... make sure you don't accept the Ubuntu defaults for partitioning - last time I looked the default will wipe the hard drive and use it all for Ubuntu
. Selecting manual partitioning you should be OK.
I suggest you export bookmarks to a html file and save it to a pen drive or similar. I used to write pdf's of important e-mails but the last update I did I just imported from my old kmail folders (it was kde based -> kde based).
You could always post to output of
and ask for a second opinion on options for whichever update you decide to do ... good luckCode:su fdisk -l cat /etc/fstab cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

Gentlemen, I have never been able to transfer bookmarks to a cd or flash drive.
( just something else I had no idea could be done ) How can I go about doing that?Linux registered user # 414321

Assuming you're using firefox, copy the file ~/.mozilla/firefox/(random).default/bookmarks.html to your flash drive.
