Boot up in Failsafe mode and edit that file.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Do you see a bootloader screen when you boot your machine?
Press the spacebar when you see that, and you *should* have several options to choose from, failsafe is what you want.

nah it wont let me press space anywhere to get to a failsafe screen...

when i start the computer i have a choice between XP and ubuntu and when press enter on ubuntu it goes to a screen where i can press 'esc' and when i do that it gives a choice between the normal one and recovery mode and memtest

Huh, well I suppose you could accomplish the same thing using the recovery mode, although I have no way of testing this method. Or you could use any LiveCD to do the same thing, but you might have to mount the drives yourself if you go that route.
