This document is what got me started with the command line interface.
Debian Tutorial
Because Ubuntu is Debian based most things in the tutorial will work on Ubuntu as well. The thing that differs most on other distros is the package manager. Ubuntu uses apt-get while systems like redhat or fedora use yum. The information in this document can be used in other distros as well, accept for the package manager.
