Angry [SOLVED] Not Able To Install NVIDIA Drivers

When I go to System>Administration>Hardware Drivers a new window pops up (no proprietary drivers are in use for this system). I click on version 177 and activate, but all that happens is a smaller window comes up (downloading and installing driver) although it never goes over 0% and then quickly disappears without any "changes applied" message.

Anyone know what the problem is?

Best thing to do is make sure you have all of your repositories updated. Open System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager and go to Settngs > Repositories. Make sure that the entry for Restricted is ticked and then after closing that dialogue box, on the main screen hit the reload button.

Do you have an active internet connection on the PC?

This problem also occurs if you have synaptic open while trying to install the driver, synaptic must be closed.

You also might just want to install the driver from within synaptic. I know that when I use Kubuntu the broadcom driver won't install right in the device driver for me (it never asks me to fetch and install but acts as if it does). But if I go into adept and just search for broadcom I can install with no problem at all.

OK, I tried that and it allowed me to add packages like Compiz etc. I also loaded all the available NVIDIA ones but am still not able to install the drivers . A little bubble even popped up telling me that proprietary drivers were available, but the same thing happens when I try to activate them, which is nothing at all. I also tried System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects and tried to install them that way, but failed once again.

And yes I have internet access on the Ubuntu PC.

Usually this fails for only 2 reasons.
    1. You have no internet connection (you do)
    2. Another package manager is working (is synaptic open?)

Just making sure, how long are you giving it to install? The drivers take a little bit of time. Also did you try installing from terminal:

    sudo apt-get install nvidia-common nvidia-glx-177 nvidia-177-modaliases nvidia-71-modaliases nvidia-96-modaliases nvidia-173 modaliases nvidia-177-kernel-source

if any of those are already installed then remove them using aptitute "sudo apt-get remove" all of the stuff above and then do the above line again. See if any errors are spit out.

Thanks. This helped a lot. I was finally able to install the drivers. Everything looks great now, except the bottom panel seems to have disappeared and the font size is ridiculously small, even here online. I'm having trouble reading what I type.

EDIT: I restarted the system and the size is back to normal. Everything is good now. Thank you.
