[SOLVED] Ubuntu, Windows and external HD
Hi, guys.
I have an external HD and would like to know if I can make two partitions on it,
one for Windows and one for Linux. Just the way I do on the internal HD.
Thank you.

Hi and Welcome !
Do you want to install Windows and Ubuntu OSes in External disk or use it as a Data Storage in both OSes?
You can setup dual boot in External disk as you do in Internal disk.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Just data storage in both.
The external HD comes with some kind of software to install in
Windows. Is there something similar for Linux?
- 02-10-2009 #4What type of External HD is this? I didn't know that external HDs need special software for access. The external HD comes with some kind of software to install in
Windows.
Ubuntu supports NTFS filesystem ( read/write access ) by default. Create NTFS partitions only and you can access those in both OSes easily. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

This is one of the big problems with Windows software. Companies always want to push their own stuff so they put "software" cd's in EVERYTHING. A hard drive DEFINITELY should not need a cd to use. The cd might have some backup stuff, probably not efficient, therefore most likely a waste of space (even if small). Plus with Windows you have to worry about fragmentations so every time you use one of those cd's you're potentially slowing down your system. Any time a cd comes (including ones that have drivers that you need), I'd strongly suggest extracting the files from the cd and just using the drivers, leave all the .exe's alone as they are mostly unnecessary programs
