    Hi,
I bought a new Toshiba Satellite laptop with an all Intel chip/board setup and a 17"
wide screen. I tried to run the Ubuntu 8.04 live/install dvd. All I see is an initial setup screen which quickly disappears and becomes a thin line on the screen. The machine
is a 64bit with 4 gig of RAM and 320gig HDD. I'd love to do a dual boot with this, but the video problem has me stumped. I'M not one who feels confident playing around
altering files. Isn't there some way to solve this problem without messing with files
    in the command line..

use the "alternate" cd to install, it uses a text interface to install, setting up video after getting it installed is no problem

Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD has FailSafe and Text Install options too. Have you tried text install option?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
