    My Ubuntu failure

Yesterday, around 10:30AM I found the Ubuntu 8.10-9.02 DVD in my mailbox. I went to my computer and used two 4GB flash drives to save most of my suse 10 files and windows documents. ( 12 hours )

I put the Ubuntu DVD into my computer to install it. I used the option to delete suse but I still was not allowed to install Ubuntu because it said windows was running in the backround. So I now realize that it was indeed my windows xp that was freezing up my computer as it " phoned home ".

I then decided that I did not want the windows xp in my computer at all. I installed Ubuntu on my machine and then spent the entire night trying to get it to work. Ubuntu sees the VT 6102 modem built into my machine but I could not find where to configure a dial-up connection. I could not hook up my printer because the cups is not hooked up. The icon for networking says it is disabled. The wired section displays a " never " sign. I could not log in as " root " to look for answers.

So between 4:30AM and 5:00AM this morning I reinstalled my suse 10 because I have to now find out how an Ubuntu os is supposed to work.

8.10 can still cause problems on some machine configurations. Go to Distrowatch and download 8.04.2 (or send off for the disk if your connection is slow) you should get better results. You can upgrade to 8.10 later this year via the Download Manager.

    ouch

cousinlucky, you might also have better luck if you start fresh and install Ubuntu onto a clean drive, then install any other distros that you wish to have aboard. Dual/triple-booting various distros with or without Windows installed can be a tricky effort sometimes, especially for new users.

It's been years since I last ran dialup, so I'm unable to offer any suggestions on that. Hopefully, someone running dialup under Ubuntu will chime in with more info.

Glad you have Suse running again!

Sorry to hear about your troubles with Ubuntu cousinlucky.

I've found if you use gparted to make a small 5 gig ( /=root) partition and Install/ boot up puppy-4.1.1-k2.6.25.16-seamonkey.iso from here
    Index of /pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux
That it has excellant dial up support with a help page when you first boot it up.

It also runs as a live CD so you can test it out and the download is only 94mb.

    For Ubuntu I got this

[ubuntu] How to configure a dialup connection with 8.10? - Ubuntu Forums

    Try right-clicking on the panel,
then click "+ Add to Panel"
    scroll down to:
    "Modem Monitor
Activate and monitor a dial-up connection"
At least, that's where I'd start.
When I still used dial-up on my Debian box, I used the modem monitor plug-in to GKrellM to run a PPP connection configured with ppp-config -- I'm sure that would work too.

    Thank You, Gentlemen!!
I have an Ubuntu 8.04.1 disk that I will try out when I get my wind back. It took me quite a long time to get acquainted with suse 10 and I expect to experience a lot of frustration dealing with Ubuntu.

I just noticed that this basic re-installed suse 10 is only using 3% of my hard drive.
