Dude Ubuntu is far better than windows...

    Ok first for installing Flash

    do this

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree
    for vlc

Open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager). In Settings -> Repositories, make sure you have a "multiverse" repository activated.

Search for vlc and install it. You should also install vlc-plugin-esd, mozilla-plugin-vlc (and libdvdcss2).
You need to check that a "multiverse" mirror is listed in your /etc/apt/sources.list.

    % sudo apt-get update
    % sudo apt-get install vlc vlc-plugin-esd mozilla-plugin-vlc

Synaptic Package Manager is pre-installed in Ubuntu. System -- Administration -- Synaptic Package Manager.
Click on Reload button to refresh package list. Type Package name in Search box to search, mark and install it.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
